Wintering Vacation

Well, we might as well admit it - we are smack dab in the middle of a Nova Scotia winter. So, why fight it? Let’s just embrace what mother nature is serving up and get out and enjoy this chilly season beauty. January served up plenty of wind and the yo-yo between rain and snow. And so far February is sliding in with a good old fashioned ice storm. This gives us plenty of reason to snuggle up by a warm fire with a glass of wine and a good book.

How do you weather the weather? Are you embracing the outdoors or burying your head under the down covers?

We try to do a little of everything. Here are some of our favorites:

  • Cross country skiing by the duck pond

  • Photo hikes - because the light is magical tone only in the dead of winter

  • Feeding the birds - crazy birds who don’t seem to understand it is winter

  • Baking bread, making homemade potato chips, baked beans and other winter delights

  • Splitting and stacking wood - who needs the gym or the treadmill?

  • Bonfires - plenty of warm enough days for a little marshmallow and hotdog roasting

  • Ice skating on the South Maitland pond

  • Learning to knit and crochet - yes, this is apparently “in” with the younger generation right now

  • Cleaning closets - out with the old, in with better organizational habits (I think I can, I think I can)

This is also a great time for us to start planning our next project for the house, and we have a few in the hopper. This year we will be renovating a bathroom or two on the historic side of the house, painting some doors, freshening some room paint, and … here’s the big one… replacing our roofing.

That’s the thing with owning a big historic home - there is always a project awaiting you. It’s a good thing that Warren is very handy and always up for a project.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner we wanted to remind everyone that Cresthaven has a lot of romance to offer in all seasons. If you are looking for a get away in the coming months, why not purchase a gift certificate for a one or two night stay? Check out our gift certificate special only available until February 14 for all the love birds out there.

Happy wintering everyone!
