Inside look at the off season

People often wonder what happens at a bed and breakfast during the off season. You would be right if you assumed that we don’t have many guests here in Maitland over the winter. While the Bay of Fundy tides and landscape is still spectacular and it’s January and our grass is still green, the air is cold and the area has no amenities. Visitors will find very few restaurants outside of the major centres, and the areas attractions and activities are all closed until May.

Our busy season typically runs from June to October and 2022 was certainly very busy. After 5 months without a day off we started our quiet season with some much needed rest. That could mean sleeping in a bit, taking long walks together, getting out for dinner, and taking a few trips.

Before long the holiday season is upon us. Since Cresthaven is a historic home in the Village of Maitland, we often decorate the house and open it up for public tours as a part of the Maitland Winterfest at the end of November.

During the holidays we often host a large, traditional family Christmas and welcome friends and family over to enjoy great food and great company. The house is an ideal setting for a traditional holiday and of course we have more than enough space with six bedrooms and three living rooms for everyone to enjoy both togetherness and privacy.

Once the holiday rush is behind us we settle in to a busy period of home projects. I’ll be honest, Warren does all the work. This year there are some paint touch ups and a few other repairs and added amenities, but our big addition is two new woodstoves. The woodstoves will make our living spaces so warm and toasty in the future. We are really excited about how these changes will enhance the enjoyment of our beautiful home.

While Warren is busy working on home projects I am getting busy helping people with their bookings, answering questions, making suggestions so that our 2023 visitors all have an amazing time. This year we are hosting a few weddings which will be magical. We are anticipating a very busy season so don’t hesitate to book your getaway early. Before we kick off this exciting season Warren and I are planning one more getaway. It’s nice to be guests instead of hosts every now and then. We’ll call it research and bring back any special touches we find during our travels.
